Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble: True Stories and Their Lessons from Sea Kayaker Magazine
George's Comments:
This is the only book devoted to sea kayaking safety, and it is loaded with wisdom you
won't find anywhere else. Every sea kayaker needs to read this book -- the sooner the
better. The stories of what went wrong in the accidents reported in this book will instill
an insight to your own fallibility. Yet the "Lessons Learned" section at the end
of each story will help you avoid getting into your own deep trouble.

Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation
George's Comments:
I highly recommend this book to all sea kayakers, especially those who are planning and
leading their own trips - whether recreational or commercial. The author's definition of
"navigation" is much broader than simply course plotting and compass use. He
includes most of the mental skills that are required to plan a trip and safely paddle from
here to there. Reading this book is a prerequisite for those taking the Kayak Academy's
overnight Training Trip (Leadership Skills Plus Trip Experience).

Oceanography of the British Columbia Coast
George's Comments:
A wealth of useful information on tides, currents, waves and much more that goes way
beyond that found in any kayaking manual. The concepts in this book apply to any ocean;
it's just the examples and illustrations that make it specific to the BC coast of Canada.
This book is so thorough and clearly written that I recommend it even if you'll never get
to paddle the BC coast.

Current Atlas: Juan de Fuca Strait to Strait of Georgia
George's Comments:
No other place on Earth has a current atlas this detailed. The entire surface of the water
is covered with vector-like arrows that illustrate the speed and direction of the current
for ebbs and floods. It is so detailed that you can see back eddies, tidal rapids, and how
things change with time throughout the current cycles...it even shows the differences in
the currents for small, medium, and large tidal ranges. Even if you never paddle in the
area covered (San Juan Islands, WA, Gulf Islands, BC Canada, etc.) studying these current
charts will help you read the water and understand currents anywhere in the world, be it
tidal or river current. If you do kayak in the NW, this book is invaluable for trip
planning.

Afoot & Afloat Series
George's Comments:
This whole series of guide books is excellent, very thorough, and interesting reading with
bits of local history in addition to tips on where to camp and what facilities are
available, etc.

Washington Public Shore Guide
George's Comments:
Every legal place to access/launch in the salt water of Washington state is documented in
this well done guide book. If you want to really explore the Puget Sound etc., this book
is a must.

Performance Kayaking
George's Comments:
A well written book for beginning and intermediate river kayakers.

Gazetteer Series
George's Comments:
This series of books consists of topo maps covering the entire state. Roads, trails, boat
launches, and campgrounds are illustrated on the maps making them very helpful for trip
planning and driving to put-ins that are off the beaten path.
