Sea Kayaking 211 - Tidal Current Expedition Training (in the San Juan Islands, WA)

San Juan Islands Map

It's all about the currents. Thinking about the Inside Passage? Learning to understand and work with the constantly changing waters around the San Juan Islands makes this course the perfect primer for anyone planning such expeditions. Paddling through the San Juan Islands at the height of the annual tidal currents is a worthy adventure for intermediate sea kayakers. On the water you'll receive individual coaching and have opportunities to test your paddling skills in a variety of challenging conditions. To this we add training for those who want to lead their own future kayak expeditions, and the thrill of kayaking on the wild side of the San Juan Islands in a group of kayakers that have the skills necessary to enjoy it.

Spend five days and four nights kayak camping in a supportive team environment learning to solve issues that arise on expeditions. And this trip has the bonus of kayaking waters frequented by pods of Orca whales.

For our alumni, this course is a perfect follow up to the Kayak Academy's other overnight training camps -- you'll further your experience with a longer trip and gain confidence as you put to practice the skills you've learned while still having an instructor to give you help when needed. For ACA, BCU and other students with intermediate level kayak skills, this trip will fill some holes left by your previous lessons and give you expedition experience needed for trips like the Inside Passage in SE Alaska.

Prerequisites: Kayak Academy's 5-day Training Camp (115) or Open Water Training Camp (113) (or equivalent with approval).

Join Bob Burnett as he teaches and leads this classic trip in Washington state's San Juan Islands.

"Thank you again for the Tidal Current Expedition Training last June. I took to heart your tips on improving my forward stroke, and it helped a lot -- no problem keeping up, or taking the lead when I wanted to. Besides being a great trip in it's own right, the San Juan's made the perfect preparation for the Exposed Coast Expedition Training later that summer. When I got to Sitka, AK I felt well-prepared, and ready." R.W.
