The Outer Island kayak is a kayak rolling machine! It's also a fast straight-line touring kayak. The Outer Island is like a true Greenland style kayak, but with smoother lines than a skin on frame boat. There are two cockpit sizes/shapes to choose from: keyhole or the more traditional near circular "Ocean Cockpit". The Outer Island is best suited for people who want a kayak that lets them learn and practice Greenland roll techniques and/or paddlers who want fast Greenland style sea kayak for day trips and the occasional over nighter. While definitely not a beginner boat, the Outer Island is surprising stable for its beam. The Outer Island comes with retractable skeg, day hatch, recessed deck fittings and reflective safety lines, rubber VCP hatches, and a comfortable low profile back band with snowboard binding style ratcheting buckles that allow you to adjust the back support while seated in the kayak -- even on the water.
As with all the Impex sea kayaks we sell, the Outer Island is built from composite (i.e. fiberglass or carbon/Kevlar co-weave lay-up).
