Broken Back Strap
A common failure on kayak trips is a broken or ripped out strap for the seat's back band. A quick field repair is to use a tie down cam buckle webbing strap to anchor the back band to the hip brace on the side of the seat. In this case I ran the cam buckle webbing through the ratchet strap buckle but it could just as well have been passed through a loop on the back band. If you don't have a cam strap, any 1" wide webbing will do if it is long enough to wrap around and tie a knot to make a loop out of it (You will probably need about a 4' long piece of webbing for this.).

This happens often enough that it would be a good idea to carry a strap for this in your kayak repair kit.

I paddled this repaired kayak for about three hours and didn't have any back issues. In fact once I started paddling I forgot all about it.
