Cali-Optics Waterproof 10x42 Monocular w/Internal Compass and Range-Finder Grid packs a lot of great features into one handheld monocular! And for kayaking, a monocular is the way to go. Compared to binoculars they are half as bulky to store, half as heavy to hold in your hand and around your neck, twice as easy to hold and use one handed (so you can steady yourself with your other hand on your paddle), and half the cost to boot. Before there were any waterproof monoculars, I used to dismantle pairs of waterproof binoculars just to save the space and weight. Then for a while Brunton used to make a nice waterproof binocular, but at $169.00 they didn't sell very well so several years ago they decided it was too small a niche product for them to bother with. And none of the other so called waterproof monoculars since then have really lived up to expectations. Cali-optics has changed this with an economical monocular full of great features.

Most compasses have five degree increments because with the naked eye it's generally useless to try to measure any more precisely. But when a compass can be read while viewing through a 10x monocular it allows you to read one degree increments easily and accurately. With practice range-finding grids inside the monocular can prove quite useful for answering the "how far is that" question on trips. And 10x magnfication really brings things in close, but unless the exit pupil diameter is big enough it is frustrating to use such high power magnification, but these 10x42 monoculars give a wide field of view and gather enough light to make 10x work.
