Jackson Zen

Brief Description

The Jackson Zen was redesigned in 2015 with added volume in the ends, more bow rocker, and more aggressive thigh braces. These improvements make the Zen the best in it's class of river running/near creek boat kayak that works well for both beginners to learn in and advanced paddlers to push their limits. Novices find the Zen is a confidence boosting kayak because of the immediately noticeable stability, forgiveness, and ease of maintaining your line. The new rocker and volume help keep the ends from diving when surfing short steep waves, and there are a lot more of those waves than there are ideal surf waves. With the new bow rocker and volume, the Zen rides over waves, skips over holes and boofs easily. Advanced boaters look to the Zen as a big water / fast river-running boat of choice. Expert paddlers love the Zen for high-speed, high control performance with a slick planing hull to make the most of every feature along the way. Combine this with the most comfortable outfitting on the market, and one of the easiest boats to roll, the Zen will shorten your learning curve. With 3 sizes there is a Zen for all but the biggest sized boater.

The Zen Comp is a lighter weight option of the same boat. Our recommendation: start a trend, buy a lightweight Zen Comp and save your back for more fun things like paddling the river.

Zen Comp (new option for 2016)

Competition model is a lighter weight option available in all three sizes. For only $150 extra you'll save about 3-4 lbs on an S, 4-5 lbs on an M or L size. This weight savings is accomplished by upgrading the material for the hull/seat stiffener from thermo-formed plastic to carbon fiber composite. Comp. models are only available at regular price in Lime and Yellow Jacket (other colors are $200 extra for special color option). Note in the specs table we list three sets of weights. The first is for the standard Zen as per the JK website, the second is what we've measured and averaged over a few standard Zens, the third is what we've measured for the first Competition Zen models that we got in stock. The first set of weights are the best ones to use when comparing to other brands of kayak (because in our experience most or all kayak manufacturers fudge the weights by several pounds). The measured weights for the standard vs. Comp. models are best used for comparing how much weight you'll save with the Comp. option.
