Three tools are necessary for accurate kayak navigation. A chart and compass are two of them, and a course plotter is the third. A course plotter is like a movable compass rose. Basically it's just a clear protractor with grid lines superimposed over it so you can square it up with the lines of latitude or longitude on your chart in order to measure true bearings for plotting a course. If you've measured bearings from a topo map while hiking, you've probably made your clear orienteering style compass double as a tiny course plotter with the neck string as your pointer. While not ideal, this works okay with topo maps because their grid lines are closely spaced, but the latitude and longitude lines on navigation charts are too far apart to accurately square up an orienteering compass. Furthermore, as with other boats, kayakers are better off using a direct reading compasses (either deck mounted or hand held) which can't be used as a course plotter. So rather than carry an orienteering compass just as an inadequate substitute for a course plotter, get a real course plotter.

There are lots of course plotters to choose from, but we've found all of them to be either too small (small ones get lost overboard too easily and are hard to read), too cluttered with extraneous features, too brittle to last, or their font is too small to read especially when covered with water. So we made our own big, simple, large font, rugged, Kayak Academy course plotter.
