A barometer is right up there with two-way VHF radios as a must-have piece of boating safety gear. There are places where you can receive a weather forecast, and a barometer is the next best thing. And as sea kayak or other small boat barometers go, the Kestrel 4000 is the best there is. Besides being small (small enough to fit in a PFD pocket with room left over), light, and water-resistant (they say waterproof, but then for sea kayakers nothing electronic is truly waterproof for long -- so use some care as you would for waterproof radios and GPS units), the Kestrel 4000 is easy to use and it displays bar graphs of the readings it has taken over time (with 300 readings stored in memory). So you don't have to write down the barometric measurements all day, it's automatically done for you in the Kestrel 4000's memory. With the Kestrel 4000, you can set the frequency of measurements anywhere from every 2 seconds to 2 hours apart (I find measurements every half-hour gives all the detail needed, and then you can have many days worth of history too. GG) You can choose what units of measure (metric or not) to use, the limits/scale of the graphs, and even what items to display on the first three pages of screens. The display has a bright back-light for night use and simple to use controls to scroll back through the bar graphs and operate the menus.

Besides measuring barometric pressure (which means on land you can also use it as an altimeter), it measures wind speed, temperature (use to see when warm or cold fronts passed over), dew point (helps predict chance of fog forming overnight), and more -- all with bar graphs you can scroll back through to look up what the measurements were and what time and date they were taken.
