Brief Description

It's a dry top, it's a paddle jacket w/ a hood, it's paddling pants for camp -- it's the new two-piece Radius sea kayaking drysuit by Kokatat. The Gore-Tex Radius dry suit, is the new best sea kayaking and sailing drysuit. The Kokatat Radius dry suit comes in Men's and Women's styles, and we have separate descriptions for each. This page is about the Men's Radius dry suit.

Basically the men's Radius drysuit takes the features of the Kokatat Expedition dry suit (hood, sleeve pockets, over-skirt, GoreTex® dry socks, etc.) and updates them into a fully dry, two-piece, dry suit with removable hood. A year ago Kokatat introduced the Idol suit which was the first truly dry two-piece dry suit, and the Radius suit builds on the same zipper technology to create a two-piece dry suit for sea kayaking -- the Radius suit comes standard with a complete package of dry suit features that sea kayakers need. Almost all the bells and whistles that are optional features on other dry suits are standard on the Kokatat Radius drysuit. To begin with, the Radius dry suit has: a fully separating Switch Zip zipper around the waist making it easy to get in and out of the suit (like pulling on pants and a pull-over jacket). This allows you to put the bottom of your suit on at home so you don't have to change clothes in the parking lot (there's even a pocket on the right thigh that you can put your wallet and keys in although the pockets are not waterproof so add an Aloksak dry bag), and on camping trips you can wear the bottom of the suit as your wind/rain pants without having any sleeves dragging on the ground. In warm conditions you can paddle with just the upper half of the suit as a fully functional dry top with or without the removable hood (note "dry tops" are only dry when in your kayak not in the water).  The over-skirt is for kayakers to keep your sea kayak drier while rolling or paddling in waves. The around the waist entry zipper also functions as a your Relief Zipper for speed and convenience when nature calls, and you can even drop your pants for no. 2. Gore-Tex® Dry Socks make it easier to get in and out of the suit as well as keep your feet dry, and neoprene ankle cuffs with adjustable "hook & loop" tab closures keep gravel out of your booties. The Radius also comes standard with: Reflective Tape on the sleeves and hood, left and right Sleeve Pockets, and a well designed removable Hood. For river kayaking etc. there is a risk of getting the hood caught on a branch etc., but if you take the hood off the suit becomes ready for white water kayaking, canoeing, rafting too (but bring the hood for camp). There's never been a drysuit with such a well designed removable hood; so even if you don't think you'll use the hood much, why not have it?

Detailed Description

On the Radius suit, the outer wrist cuffs (the neoprene cuffs that fit over the latex wrist gaskets) are adjustable with "hook & loop" closures so you can loosen the outer cuffs to make it more comfortable to wear all day, at camp, etc. Similarly, the neck on the Radius is more comfortable than drysuit with non-adjustable neoprene collars around the latex neck gasket.

The hood on the Radius builds on the fantastic design Kokatat did on their Expedition suit, but the Radius hood is removable! The hood is attached to the suit via three little tabs of "hook and loop" material - no zipper. The hood is extremely comfortable whether you are wearing it or not. When the hood is on but you're not using it, the hood can be hidden inside the collar, the hood can be folded up and held out of the way with a "hook & loop" strap that is attached to the back of the hood, or simply let the hood lay down flat like a very wide, low collar. The new hood design is comfortable to wear, stays in place well in wind (we've tested it in 20 knot head winds which make rain hats flop like crazy), it turns with your head so it doesn't blind you, and it doesn't hinder your ability to roll your kayak up regardless of whether you are wearing the hood or have it loose around your neck. In fact, wearing the hood helps keep water out of your ears and keeps your head warmer when rolling in cold water. Since it's removable, there's no reason not to have the hood.
