Introduction

The North Shore RM Aspect and Aspect LV are two of the highest quality rotomolded touring kayaks in the 14'-15' size range. They have the same skeg system as the late model (2011 and newer) Valley sea kayaks, and an ergonomic keyhole cockpit which combined with its low rear deck makes rolling super easy (even hand rolls). Thanks to having less overhang at the ends, Aspect RM's achieve good speed for kayaks in the 14'-15' length, and they are highly maneuverable. The Aspect is a good choice for touring on slow moving rivers, as well as coastal rock gardening and surf conditions. Aspect is versatile enough for both entry-level enthusiasts to learn in and advanced paddlers who want to play rough. Athletic and adventurous users will really appreciate the Aspect because it won't limit them the way rec. kayaks in this price range and size would. The RM Aspect comes in two sizes: RM Aspect and RM Aspect LV - designed to fit different sized paddlers.

Description

NorthShore brand is now owned by Valley Kayaks. They are built in the same factory in England and share most of the same components (Valley hatches etc.). As with Valley's Roto-Molded kayaks, all NorthShore RM kayaks are now build with a tripple layer construction making them stiffer and more durable than single layer RM kayaks (i.e. less risk of warping).

The nearest comparable kayak to the Aspect is the Dagger Stratos which is 14' long. In comparison to a RM Stratos, the RM Aspect has a longer waterline which makes the Aspect a bit faster, and the Valley (VCP) hatches on the Aspect are both dryer and easier to open and close than the hatches on the Stratos.

Aspects have moderately soft chines and shallow 'V' hull which give predictable and responsive handling with good tracking, yet because it's only about 14 1/2' long it's also very maneuverable. Aspect carves quickly when you edge it on the go. Aspect's blend of moderate primary stability and high secondary stability builds confidence at edging to carve turns. This could be a great first kayak to learn in or a fun play boat for experienced paddlers to add to their quiver (also a good loaner kayak when you want to take a friend along).

Although you can do an occasional weekend trip in a RM Aspect, the kayak is primarily designed for adventurous day trips. If you want a kayak for day trips that include rock garden paddling or surfing in a touring kayak, a plastic Aspect is a top choice. Aspect's are easy to roll, and their size in an advantage at pool sessions too. If you are looking for your first sea kayak and can't even afford a roto-molded Tempest - you'll be way better off with a new plastic RM Aspect than a used glass kayak in this price range.

As a rough guide, we find:
The Aspect LV is best suited for paddlers 5' 4" to 5'10", 120-190 lbs
The Aspect is best suited for paddlers 5' 10" to 6'4", 180 - 240 lbs

With the exception of a day hatch, Aspects come standard with the latest features you would expect to only see in a full-on sea kayak (i.e. retractable skeg, recessed deck fittings & safety lines, rubber hatches, adjustable back rest, compass recess). The Aspect's retractable skeg* has a precise, smooth slider bar/cable control. They have a well designed keyhole cockpit with good hip and knee braces, and a comfortable back band that adjusts. Both hatches are Valley (VCP) brand rubber hatches that seal like food containers. VCP hatches are widely considered the best kayak hatches on the market.

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, the kayak has it's natural maneuverability; put the skeg down and the kayak tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg has made rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).
