Brief Description

The Vortex is TideRace Kayaks only roto-molded model. The Vortex only comes in one size and it is best suited for paddlers 5' 2" to 6'1", 120-200 lbs.

Vortex come standard with front and rear main hatches and front and rear day hatches (at last, a hatch you can use while on the water!). They also have a retractable skeg, recessed deck fittings & reflective safety lines, KayakSport hatches, and an adjustable back rest.

2015 Vortex are built using a triple layer roto-molded construction for improved stiffness and durability.

Detailed Description

The Vortex is based on the design of the TideRace Xtra, but it is sized to fit like a slightly snugger TideRace Xcite which is between the fit of the Xtra and Xtra HV. Vortex has the looks and proven seaworthiness of the Greenland/British style kayaks, but updated. The Vortex has a hard chine and nearly flat planing hull in the mid section of the hull that transitions to a moderately chine toward the ends. This cross sectional shape combined with high amount of rocker helps it surf well, maneuver quickly, and work in rough conditions extremely well. The Vortex comes standard with features such as: a retractable skeg* with state-of-the-art precise, smooth slider cable control, front and rear hatches, three foam bulkheads (two rear bulkheads), recessed deck fittings for safety lines, and chart holder bungees, keyhole cockpit with good hip and aggressive knee braces, and a comfortable back band.

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, Vortex is very maneuverable; put the skeg down and an Vortex tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg are fast making rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).

If you are looking for a sea kayak that surfs well and plays great in wind and rough conditions, the Vortex and the Tiderace Xtra/Xtra HV are the hottest new Brit style day trip rock garden, surfing touring kayaks.

Review of the TideRace Vortex, George Gronseth:

The Vortex has a no nonsense cockpit design. It fits securely and comfortably without having to do any customization, and without a lot of bling to break or corrode. Like the Xtra, the Vortex is super maneuverable, stable, and easy to control in surf. Perfect for rock gardening and it holds good speed while paddling to where you want to play. In tideraces it makes fun snappy eddy turns and surfs standing waves great. This is one of the few sea kayaks that could be an easy first boat to learn in or a great performance kayak for experts who want a boat they can play hard in.

The Kayak Academy waited a long time for a Brit kayak that was designed and built well enough that we would want to sell it. TideRace Kayaks got it right and the Kayak Academy is proud to be their exclusive dealer in Washington State.

Special Shipping Required

Kayaks are excluded from our free shipping policy. Sea kayaks are expensive to ship and prone to being damaged (however, roto-molded polyethylene kayaks survive shipping better than composite kayaks). We recommend picking them up at our shop. If needed, we can provide contact info for specialty boat hauling businesses so you to arrange your own FOB shipping.
