TideRace Xcape

$ 4,199.00 USD

Brief Description

If you want a light, fast, stable sea kayak that does everything well, the Tiderace Xcape is as good as it gets. Whether you want an easy handling kayak for day trips or a kayak that can haul a lot of gear for long vacations, the Xcape is it. The Xcape sea kayaks have enough stability to please just about anyone with a little kayaking experience, and yet they're sleek enough to maintain good glide. The Xcape kayaks are easy to edge and roll, and their secondary stability will make you feel very secure when carving turns. Xcapes cut through the water with little effort making the miles go by most enjoyably. Available in three sizes so everyone from small to XXL can find an Xcape that fits. (the Xcape S size is available in standard G-Core layup or G-Core Lite -- only 48lb!)

Detailed Description

Of all the kayaks on the market, the closest thing to an Xcape is the Tiderace Xplore (which is also available in three sizes to fit most paddlers, but the fit of the Xcape's is a bit smaller than the corresponding Xplore series). In comparison to the Xplore, the Xcape is a little more stable and stiffer tracking. If you like the Xplore but want to take photos, the Xcape series have that little extra bit of stability that makes all the difference. Xcapes have cockpit ergonomics similar to the Xplore albeit a little more conventional (a little lower knee position than the Xplores). This unique cockpit design is part of what makes Tiderace sea kayaks more efficient to paddle and more comfortable for long days in the kayak. Highly skilled paddlers and those who can justify owning more than one sea kayak will probably prefer the Xplore series, but the Xcape is going to be the new standard and most people's favorite kayak.

Tiderace kayaks are the creation of Aled Williams -- an experienced British kayak designer who created the Rockpool and earlier British expedition sea kayaks. Tiderace Kayaks are the newest, most up to date of all the British style kayaks on the market. Tiderace's goal is to make them the highest quality sea kayaks though the use of superior materials and craftsmanship in construction. The Tiderace kayaks are the result of much experience in designing and building high quality sea kayaks. Of all the British style sea kayaks on the market, the Tiderace Xcape series kayaks have the most comfortable seat, most aggressive knee/thigh braces, most comfortable and durable back band, best skeg system, and the highest overall quality. Think of Tiderace as Brit kayaks Version 4.0

If you started with an Xcape as your first kayak, you would be way better off than most people, and it would take a long time to "outgrow" an Xcape.

As a rough guide, we find:
The Xcape-S is best suited for paddlers 5' 1" to 5' 7", 110-165 lbs
The Xcape is best suited for paddlers 5' 6" to 6' 1", 160-215 lbs
The Xcape-X is best suited for paddlers 5' 9" to 6' 6", 215-260 lbs

All three sizes of the Tiderace Xcape have the looks and proven seaworthiness of the British/Greenland style sea kayak, but updated and without the quality problems that have plagued so many other kayaks. The Tiderace Xcapes have a moderately chined hull that carves turns and handles well in rough seas without the added drag or fragility of a harder chine. The Tiderace Xcapes come standard with features such as: the forward day hatch in front of the cockpit (a hatch you can actually use while on the water!), a retractable skeg* with state-of-the-art precise, smooth cable control, Kayaksport hatches (oval front and rear hatches plus round front and rear day hatches), front and rear fiberglass bulkheads (two rear bulkheads plus front bulkhead), fiberglass seams, recessed deck fittings, perimeter safety lines, reflective chart holder bungees, keyhole cockpit with good hip and knee braces, and a comfortable adjustable back band.

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, Xcapes are very maneuverable; put the skeg down and an Xcape tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg are fast making rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).
