Trak Seeker ST16

Trak Seeker ST16

$ 2,999.00 USD

Brief Description

Trak Kayaks came up with a whole new concept in folding kayak design - they call it the "Tri-active Performance System". What this means is the Seeker ST16 has hydraulic pumps in the cockpit that you can adjust. Pumps on the gunwales flex the hull so as to curve it right or left. Trak calls this their "VariTRIM Adjustment", and it can totally eliminate weather cocking in any wind conditions without a rudder or skeg. (Weather cocking is the tendency to turn upwind while moving forward) This is an amazing feat - few hard shell kayaks work as well in wind as the Seeker ST16 - I know because I've spent a lot of time testing a lot of sea kayaks in all kinds of wind (George Gronseth). Since the pumps and all are inside the kayak, there's no skeg box to leak, no skeg to jam, no cable to bend, no rudder to break. And there's no springy rudder pedals! It's a beautifully simple system.

Detailed Description

Another Seeker ST16 exclusive is Trak's VariTRAK Adjustable Rocker. A hydraulic pump in the keel can be used to change the keel shape from straight to highly rockered. It's like getting two kayaks for the price of one - only better because you can change the rocker on the fly! If you are going to surf wind waves or play in currents, maneuverability is the name of the game - so pump the keel adjuster to it's max and you'll have a kayak with a lot of rocker. If you are paddling in straight lines for miles, stiff tracking and speed are what you want - so open the quick release valve on the keel pump and the Seeker ST16 will return to a straight keel. It's quick and easy to adjust to the conditions.

We find the assembly time and learning process is similar to that for other folding kayaks, but the Seeker ST16 is the first and only folding kayak that paddles like a hard shell! Even without the TPS system, the lines of the Seeker make it a sleek, fast kayak, and maneuverable kayak to begin with. It's seat is like you would find in a hard shell kayak - it even has functioning hip braces, and the seat rigidly locks into the frame and coaming so the kayak feels like an extension of your lower body. Compared to the Seeker, other folding kayaks feel more like a canoe or recreational kayak. The Seeker's fit and weight capacity,  is best for the Medium to Med-Large paddler. It's not the lightest folding kayak, but the advantages of the hydraulic pumps and hard shell style seat make it worth the extra weight, and the storage bag it comes with has built in rollers to make it easy to walk it through airports. If you're serious about getting a folding kayak. You've got to try paddling this kayak.
