Brief Description

Kayak Academy is proud to be an authorized dealer for the new Valley Gemini sea kayaks.

Dec. 2012 Valley introduced two new light weight sea kayaks called the Gemini SP and Gemini ST. Summer 2013 Valley followed the success of the glass Gemini SP with a Roto-molded version too (note the roto-molded Gemini SP has a slightly smaller fit than the glass version). The Gemini ST handles like a longer kayak; moderately rockered, good stability, long waterline and a fine bow ensure the ST tracks well and gives it a touring speed better than many longer kayaks. The Gemini SP increased rocker, greater bow volume, harder chines, and flatter mid-hull cross-section, all contribute to its performance in the rough. It’s extremely nimble, surfs exceedingly well, and avoids pearling. Produced in a stronger Lay-up, the SP provides everything you’d expect from a true ocean going play-boat.

Detailed Description

Conventional wisdom previously dictated that proper sea kayaks needed to be a minimum of 16ft long. Short boats used to be considered too slow or too difficult to paddle in challenging conditions (however anyone familiar with the old Mariner Coaster knows this isn't necessarily true). For Valley the decision to develop a proper sub-16ft kayak was further complicated by the spectrum of reasons a paddler might seek-out a shorter model.

On the one hand you have those seeking something that handles like a longer boat; i.e. that prioritizes tracking and speed but who might be hoping that a shorter kayak will be significantly lighter and easier to manage off the water. At the other extreme you have those willing to sacrifice some speed and tracking if it makes the kayak more fun in surf-zones, tideraces and rock-hopping; basically when ‘playing the sea’, a descriptive phrase that probably says it all! Unfortunately, focus on one and you invariably compromise the other, there is no perfect all-rounder! Valley’s response: ‘Project Gemini’, the twins! Imagine starting with a strong foundation by creating a base core DNA, a mid-point design that could then be tuned in one direction to create the perfect touring model and in the other to create a play version. Couple this unique design approach with cutting-edge infused composite constructions and you suddenly have the most exciting development to hit sea-kayaking in recent years.

Of course you can still play in the touring version and tour in the play one because they share the same core DNA. So yes, there is plenty of overlap, but the further you get to the ends of that use-spectrum, the more you’ll benefit from the ‘specialist’ and the more you’ll enjoy your paddling in the ‘right’ kayak.

The Gemini also features a removable deck-pod storage-unit in front of the cockpit. This Pod/compartment can be removed from the kayak and taken up to camp (or into the car/house) with you. The deck-pod is ideal for things like valuables, camera, snacks, car keys, and small items of safety-kit that you might always want close to hand. It's really nice having a day hatch in front of the cockpit where you can see what you are looking for and easily open and close the hatch by yourself!. Although we love the deck pod, we modify all our Valley kayaks with this pod by adding two short bungee cords over the pod/hatch in front of the cockpit to secure it better. With the right location for these bungees, you can still remove the pod when you want to, but it won't fall out on its own.

Other features of the Gemini include a locking point situated behind the cockpit and special attention given to cockpit ergonomics - think comfort in an ergonomic way! It's hard to over state that the Gemini is one of the most comfortable and ergonomic sea kayaks ever.

All Valley sea kayaks come standard with features you would expect in top-of-the-line sea kayaks (i.e. retractable skeg, day hatch, recessed deck fittings, rubber hatches, removable seat pad, and adjustable back rest).

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, a kayak can be maneuverable; put the skeg down and it tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg have made rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).

Gemini Reviews by George Gronseth

My first impression of paddling the Gemini SP was that it felt very comfortable in an ergonomic way. It tracked well (and this is the SP!). It feels quick and easily keeps up with 17'-18' kayaks for all but sprinting. At 47 actual pounds, carrying and loading the Gemini is a dream, and it's probably the stiffest and strongest sea kayak that is anywhere near this light. The second time I paddled the SP I did some more scientific tests and found I could spin it 360 deg. with just three sweeps! That's one stroke less than an Illusion. It turned equally well with forward or reverse sweeps. This makes the Gemini SP one of the most responsive sea kayak I've ever tested (Illusions and Coasters used to be my benchmarks for maneuverability, but they take me four strokes to spin). Overall the Gemini SP reminds me of a slightly roomier, longer, more comfortable Mariner Coaster (an all time favorite) -- albeit with nicer hatches, bulkheads, and a skeg. Another comparison would be like a Valley Avocet for med-large sized people. If you've been looking for a light weight maneuverable sea kayak for weekend and day trips, it's here.
