Valley kayaks have been called, "the original British style sea-kayaks". So a little history is in order. This is a design style that many believe started with the original Nordkapp, in 1974. The Anas Acuta is the kayak which really started things off for Valley when launched in 1972. Developed from a native Greenland kayak brought back from the West Greenland village of Lgdlorssuit, it is still in demand today over 35 years on from its inception (now available in a choice of small "ocean cockpit" or keyhole cockpit)! With the Anas Acuta, Valley became one of the first companies to produce a specialist sea kayak. Although kayaking on the sea can be traced back several thousand years through various cultures it was the fiberglass sea kayak that led to the activity gaining popularity as a sport.

Detailed Description

A few years of pushing the limits of the Anas Acuta led the British pioneers of our sport to a list of further demands from their kayaks. Their most pressing need was the accommodation of equipment for longer self-supported expeditions, but without sacrificing performance. This led to the development of the Valley Nordkapp. Designed for the British Norway expedition in 1975 the Nordkapp was more famously used for the first rounding of Cape Horn by kayak, and has since been the mode for many other "firsts" around the globe. The design principles adopted in this kayak, i.e. moderately "V"'d keel, softer chines and the distinct Greenland side profile (with increased freeboard for load carrying) became so widespread that these characteristics became known worldwide as "the British Style" sea kayak. Such is the reputation and ubiquity of the Nordkapp, that it is now one of the benchmarks by which other sea kayaks are compared.

In simple terms, the contemporary Valley sea kayaks all have moderate "V" hulls and soft (round) chines and are designed primarily to be skeged kayaks. In practice, these design characteristics, give predictable and versatile sea kayaks suited to all types of open-water paddling in all types of conditions. There are three base designs within this category; The Avocet, The Aquanaut and The Nordkapp. All three models exhibit the versatility these core features impart, but each also has its own finer design and performance traits that make them better weighted to some types of paddling and paddlers. The Avocets are highly maneuverable sea kayaks great for ocean play (rock gardening, surfing, tidal rapids, etc.). Nordkapps are expedition kayaks built for long distance efficiency and gear hauling. Aquanauts and the new Etains fall between the other two models making them great all around models for anyone who asks "if you could only own one sea kayak".... Aquanauts are especially pleasing to newer paddlers and make an excellent first sea kayak for enthusiastic novices and intermediates. Etains are for Intermediate to Advanced paddlers who can handle a little sleeker hull.

All Valley sea kayaks come standard with features you would expect in top-of-the-line sea kayaks (i.e. retractable skeg, day hatch, recessed deck fittings, rubber hatches, foam seat pad, adjustable back rest).

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, a kayak can be maneuverable; put the skeg down and it tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg have made rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).
