Sirona Description

Summary – At around 16’ (488cm) the Sirona is short enough to be considered an Ocean play-boat but long enough to hold it’s speed, even when moderately laden. True, it is not intended for multi-week expeditions but it is certainly very suitable for multi-day camping trips. There are three sizes of composite Sirona and for 2016 one size roto-molded Sirona RMs (the RM Sirona is described on a separate page). For those familiar with the three sizes of Valley Etains, each of the three Sirona's it a little roomier than its cousin.
Background – While it's true that 17'-18' length allows comfortable multi-week trips to be undertaken, the Sirona is a great length for those who want a bit of everything, short enough to be easily maneuvered, on or off the water, but long enough to have the speed to keep pace in any group and carry a moderate load for short camping trips!
Design – First in production in 2016 the Sirona was an instant hit. Most testers commenting that it retained the versatility of its predecessor, the Avocet but also noting that it possessed a more playful personality reminiscent of the earlier Pintail.
Despite its playful personality, its sixteen-foot hull is one of the fastest in its class, while the hull also responds predictably to edging and has a stability profile that allows even newer paddlers to exploit this.
Although not conceived as a long-range expedition kayak, the Sirona is not limited to mere day-boat duties, it being more than capable of multi-day adventures, the hull speed again being of benefit, allowing a Sirona paddler to keep pace in any group, good seat ergonomics provides all day comfort and the predictable handling easily absorbs variations in load.
The Sirona is truly a kayak to enjoy at any level of ability and one that your skills will never outgrow!

Conclusion - .Of course, longer kayaks will ultimately have more maximum hull-speed but this advantage only appears at speeds above those of regular group paddling. Equally a full-on expedition kayak like the Etain will more easily accommodate a heavy payload. However be realistic, if, like most people, your paddling consists of regular social day paddles, some rough water play, the odd overnighter and only the very rare possibility of anything longer. Then you'll enjoy your paddling more in a Sirona

The Sirona is a state-of-the-art replacement for the venerable Avocet. Sirona's combine the famous maneuverability of the Avocet with more speed, more storage, more foot room, bigger hatches, better ergonomics (read comfort and efficiency), and better handling in surf and rough water. That's a lot of improvements.

Like other the contemporary Valley sea kayaks, the Sirona has a moderate "V" hull with soft (round) chines and is designed to take advantage of it's retractable skeg. In practice, these design characteristics, give predictable and versatile sea kayaks suited to all types of open-water paddling in all types of conditions.

All Valley sea kayaks come standard with features you would expect in top-of-the-line sea kayaks (i.e. retractable skeg, day hatches (front and rear), recessed deck fittings, rubber hatches, foam seat pad, adjustable back rest).

*A skeg looks like the fin on the bottom of a surf board except on sea kayaks this skeg is designed to retract into a trunk on the bottom of the hull. With the skeg up, a kayak can be maneuverable; put the skeg down and it tracks straight even in side wind conditions where most kayaks without rudders weathercock (turn up wind). This combination of good hull design and a retractable skeg have made rudders (and all their problems and limitations) obsolete on sea kayaks (at least for people who know how to paddle).

Valley History

Valley kayaks are, "the original British style sea-kayaks". So a little history is in order. This is a design style that many believe started with the Nordkapp, in 1974. But the Anas Acuta is the kayak which really started things off for Valley when launched in 1972. Developed from a native Greenland kayak brought back from the West Greenland village of Lgdlorssuit, it is still in demand today over 40 years on from its inception (now available in a choice of small "ocean cockpit" or keyhole cockpit)! With the Anas Acuta, Valley became one of the first companies to produce a specialist fiberglass sea kayak. Although kayaking on the sea can be traced back several thousand years it was the fiberglass sea kayak that led to the sport's popularity as we know it today.

After a few years of pushing the limits of the Anas Acuta paddlers realized the need for a kayak that could  accommodate equipment for longer self-supported expeditions without sacrificing performance. This led to the development of the Valley Nordkapp. Designed for the British Norway expedition in 1975 the Nordkapp was more famously used for the first rounding of Cape Horn by kayak, and has since been the mode for many other "firsts" around the globe. The design principles adopted in this kayak, i.e. moderately "V"'d keel, softer chines for less drag and the distinct Greenland side profile (with increased freeboard for load carrying) became so widespread that these characteristics became known worldwide as "the British Style" sea kayak. Such is the reputation and ubiquity of the Nordkapp, that it is now one of the benchmarks by which other sea kayaks are compared.
