P&H Sea Kayak Skeg Blade
P&H Sea Kayak Skeg Blade
These skeg blades fits P&H Sea Kayaks 2012 and newer which use a cord to retract the skeg blade rather than a steel cable. If you have an older kayak with a steel wire cable these blades won't work (we can special order one for those if needed).
When replacing skeg blade you will also probably need to replace the control string unless you can untie the knot at the blade end. To untie the knot, lower the skeg control all the way. Pull the end of the string out of the blade while pushing the blade up into the skeg box and taping the blade in the retracted position. Use needle nose pliers to untie the knot. If this doesn't work, cut the string and replace it.
Once the control string is cut or untied, you can replace the blade. On roto-molded P&H kayaks, there is a little access cover above the blade on the kayak deck. Under this access cover you can undo the knot and cord-lock on the bungee that pulls the blade axle up into the skeg trunk. Then pull the blade out the bottom of the hull. On composite P&H (fiberglass etc.) kayaks there is a bungee cord wrapped around the blade axle and then into a bead that slips up into the skeg box from the bottom - use needle nose pliers to pull this bead and bungee out of it's grove from the bottom of the skeg box.
